Over the past couple days I have been researching Root Cellar designs and their principles.

There is a lot of information out there and not all of it lines up with each other... This is both good and bad.
Good in the sense you can see what works...
Bad in the fact that you can't get specific details that you may need, like wall thickness for example.

I persevered and this is what I came up with;

Main Room Dimensions: 4m x 6m

See the image build breakdown after the jump.

Foundation Doors and Stairs

Walls Up Bond Beam w Height Adjustment

Stair Walls

The roof will either be a flat reinforced slab or it will have a flat wooden truss with plywood attached then a thin slab that's reinforced.
At the top step, it is 3m below the surface; Apparently the ideal depth to maintain the best temperature stability.

List of features missing from the images;

  1. Door Frames
  2. Inlet Vent / Pipe
  3. Outlet Vent / Pipe
  4. Backfill for the Stairs
  5. Electrical Fittings / Lighting

For the pipes, I will probably end up using 50mm PVC with a ball valve to allow cool air in or not.

The floor in the Cellar will be either a tamped earthen floor with a linseed oil finish, or a slightly raised wooden floor for ventilation.

Once the roof is in place, there is roughly 30 - 40cm of earth to be replaced to cover the cellar and to bring it to level.
What I intend on doing is putting in some annual plants so that they can provide shade for the cellar to help keep it cooler.
Maybe the main herb garden?

Lot's of options to consider... As always, discuss;
